Tech Tips # 22

Description

HISTORY:

Amerex Corporation has produced dry chemical agents since 1973, both for installation in new fire extinguishers and various sizes of packaged recharges. In those 24 years, there has not been a reported incident of chemical toxicity in chemical production, fire extinguisher manufacturing, testing or training. Because the various dry chemicals are composed of very finely divided particles, occasionally airborne dust is present in some operations. As in the case of any nuisance dust, the use of a dust mask is recommended (but not mandated) to avoid any possible allergic reaction. Dry chemicals do not break down into toxic materials even when applied to a fire; however, the by-products of combustion (the emissions from the burning material) can be harmful and should be avoided.
