AB&I Adopt A Spot Continues
March 13, 2018
AB&I is proud of their ongoing partnership with the Adopt a Spot program in Oakland, California. Adopt a Spot is run by the City of Oakland Public Works Agency. The program allows community organizations to play an active role in maintaining and beautifying an area that needs attention. AB&I adopted San Leandro Street between 76th and 81st Avenue. Team member Salvador Mendoza sweeps and blows off the sidewalks and picks up garbage regularly in the designated area.
In April 2017, the AB&I environmental team (lead by Monica Perez) adopted Elmhurst Creek directly behind AB&I's property by the railroad tracks. Every four months or so, Monica recruits several team members to help clean up the creek by picking up debris, clearing the weeds and getting rid of the illegal dumping (televisions, tents, clothes, etc.).
AB&I General Manager Michael Lowe followed through on a promise he made to Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and City Councilman Larry Reid (District 7) at the AB&I open house in 2016 to adopt another street near the gate #1 area at the facility. Team member Carlos Gonzalez spear headed this effort and obtained the required approvals from the Planning Department to pave the sidewalk. The sidewalk is now in place and it looks great.
AB&I also received a request from 81st Library Manager Brian Guenther to help them clean-up the grounds around the library. Team members Salvador Mendoza and Gilberto Bolanos started the work in early February. The original request was to remove debris, but Salvador and Gilberto went above and beyond and removed all the overgrown weeds as well. Good job Salvador and Gilberto.
We appreciate the team participation in these important projects to improve the community which our team members live and work.
