Manchester Tank Elkhart Environmental Manager Steve Jacobson Volunteers with “FIRST”
March 10, 2014
Have you ever heard of “FIRST”? It’s an acronym For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. FIRST organizes high school robotics competitions with thousands of teams around the country. It’s run by volunteers and sponsors who get a kick out of seeing the kids of today turning into the leaders of tomorrow. Steve Jacobson, Environmental Manager at Manchester Tank & Equipment in Elkhart, Indiana decided to volunteer at the Southfield, Michigan district competition on February 28th and March 1st.
Steve’s volunteer assignment turned out to be “Safety Advisor” working with a representative from Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Over a two day period, the Safety Advisors interviewed the Safety Captains on all forty teams that competed. These safety programs ranged from just wearing safety glasses to teams with a written Job Safety Analysis for each tool used to build their robot. The UL Industrial Safety Award at this event was given to Team #201, The FEDS.
